Local economic development benefits more than 4000 low income families in border cities
Having strengthened the economic development of more than 4000 families, the Border Cities project completed its activities. The project had been executed by CARE International in Bolivia in collaboration with six local organizations and under the financing of the European Commission and CARE International UK, and additionally with a counterpart of CARE in Bolivia and the local organizations.
The area of influence of the project reached five border cities in the country: Cobija, Guayaramerín, Puerto Suárez, Puerto Quijarro and Yacuiba and was oriented toward contributing to the reduction of poverty through the development of effective alliances through civil society and local governments in order to stimulate local economic development and encouraging local low-income families in urban areas to stimulate the generation of local economic opportunities, which will promote the generation of jobs and income and will permit improvement in the economic standing of the families.
Important results were achieved that allow a Local Economic Development (LED) to do the groundwork for the cities of influence, establishing and strengthening municipal offices for productive development, increasing the allocation of resources to the development of productive projects in the annual operation plans of the municipalities, and managing financial support from the local governments for economic initiatives. Other results included the forming and strengthening of economic organizations and small businesses and establishing links between economic organizations and financial entities primarily training diverse groups of producers in business management and technical vocations.
With this initiative, CARE in Bolivia and its partners (Herencia, Caritas Guayaramerín, OCMA, CAPIA Santa Cruz, Pantanal Association of Municipalities and Agro XXI) contribute with the formation and application of important elements that help strengthen the integrated development of the cities supported by the project and that additionally influence other border cities in Bolivia.
