Thanks to the project now we have safe water in our houses and we also have latrines and now we don’t get sick anymore…
“With the use of the latrines we don’t contaminate the water and we don’t get sick anymore, neither the people nor the animals.”

Muska Chuquisaca, Bolivia.- “All of the children and adults of the community had to drink dirty water from a gully, which in the rainy season was contaminated because people and animals were using it as a bathroom in the bad weather, and due to this we would get sick with diarrhea and scabies to the point of near-death. Now, thanks to the project we have safe water in our houses and we also have latrines and now we don’t get sick anymore.”

This is the testimony of Rene Pérez, father of four children, agriculturist, and leader who lives in the community of Muska (province of Tomina, municipality of El Villar, department of Chuquisaca). Like him, 36 families that live in the community have access to safe water and latrines at home and at school. In this way the number of illnesses from drinking contaminated water was reduced. The improvement of the quality of life that those people have experienced is the result of the support that CARE International in Bolivia is providing through the Food Security Program – Title II that is being implemented in the region under the financing of USAID.

This program, implemented for the provision of safe water by constructing a system with water catchmen, adduction pipelines, steel and concrete tanks, and water distribution by pipelines to the in – house taps, as well as the construction of flushing latrines has allowed a great reduction of illnesses borne from drinking contaminated water. The great will of the municipal government and of the community to implement the project has been a great incentive to be able to reach the final objective and, despite the dispersion of the population, reach 90% of the residents of the community.
Results Food Security Program in the community of Muska:

• 36 families benefited with indoor plumbing, including latrine

• 42 students benefited with in-school showers and toilets

All of the children and adults of the community had to drink dirty water from a gully
