Entrepreneurs with market opportunity

In Guayaramerin, a group of horticulturists producing individually organized and started to have a different vision around their production, forming the Association of Horticulturists of Guayaramerin. Member are now established as economic actors, with the objective of supplying the local market and satisfying the needs of consumers with quality products in a municipality where production is almost nonexistent. Women entrepreneurs in the Association stand out, like Verónica Rivero, who for many years has practiced horticulture as one of her primary activities. With the sale of her vegetables, she has been able to complement her economic resources to support her family and educate her children.

Doña Verónica has a great entrepreneur’s spirit, because of which she is now part of the directive for the Association, as a key motivating element. However, this means she must divide her time between her family and her growing. One of her personal challenges is making the organization grow so that all the partners benefit from increased incomes. She indicates that, thanks to the Border Cities project executed by CARE in Bolivia and financed by the European Commission, the organization has improved. Additionally, she has been trained during technical assistance provided as well as courses in accounting, marketing, and leadership.

“…it’s going to be a bit difficult to organize a group that keeps growing, but one or two years from now we’ll see the fruits of our sacrifice …in the meetings I tell them, to motivate them, that we should work, that we shouldn’t settle with the little we have, that only with work will we improve… little by little people are going to see that from one little plot of land we are growing, so they will be motivated to work…” indicated Ms Rivero.

Doña Verónica concluded, “I thank the Border Cities project because thanks to the teachings through trainings in accounting, marketing, and leadership, I am producing better all the time. Now with the floods I have lost everything, but CARE has helped me with seed and I will plant again. This time it will go better for me and surely for my companions, too… additionally we will have income, not just to eat but also to grow our little garden…”
With the Border Cities Project, the Association of Horticulturists of Guayaramerín has been strengthened:

• 27 partners (men and women) have improved their nutrition by consuming vegetables

CARE has helped me with seed and I will plant again. This time it will go better for me and surely for my companions, too… additionally we will have income, not just to eat but also to grow our little garden
